And so is she. Just how does this girl who wears dresses two sizes small, swears under her breath, makes diary entries of her nicotine and alcohol consumption win your heart everytime? Simply put, because she''s the irreverent Bridget Jones. High-society''s big scourge. The kind of girl, simple boys want to take home. No, not to meet mama for sure.

After finding true love in the last Bridget Jones (2001), you think Bridget is going to live happily ever after? Mais non. Bridget, being Bridget successfully embarrasses tight-assed boyfriend Mark Darcy (Colin Firth) at the annual law society dinner quiz. She suspects, he''s got the hots for his co-worker as well.

Bridget depends as before on the wisdom of three friends whose advice is infallibly dangerous. So the naïve Bridget decides she''s had it up to here with Mark and is moving on.

Moving on, did we say? From the frying pan right into the damn bonfire. She hitches up with the vermin to beat all vermins, her ex-lover and current boss Daniel Cleaver (Hugh Grant) in Thailand. The script contrives that the two TV reporters go on a junket. Bridget''s cup of woes runneth over. She almost snogs her ex-lover; eats marijuana-laced mushrooms and is thrown into prison for alleged drug-trafficking.

Problem is that Bridget 2 is a series of comic episodes strung together, unlike Bridget 1, where the her raging raison d''etre (besides her hormones) was to find true love. But if you''ve negotiated with the lack of a story line here, then just be ready to chuckle away at all the smart whippersnapper lines and seriously clever dialogue

It''s also a bit outrageous to see two men clearly past their prime slugging it out for an obese girl.

Colin Firth like all good guys hangs in there and is so cool being nonchalant that you want to reach out and give him a good shakeup. Hugh Grant as the rascal without a soul is so effortless that you forget that he''s actually acting. Bad guys get to
do all the good acting to do these days.

Renee Zellweger with her shiny optimism is really the soul of the film. One of her greatest moments: Bridget in a super-bra teaching the inmates of the Thai prison to croon to Madonna''s Like a Virgin.

The film like Bridget herself teeters precariously on the edge of reason. For those of you looking for a semblance of sense, stay away. Those looking for madness, hop on.

Watch the sunshine girl add sparkle to a movie which coasts along on the strength of sheer silliness. Go Bridget go, wear giant panties, pull your neckline up, and tell girls it''s ok to be fat and normal. Hopefully, we''ll see you soon in Part 3.

CLICK HERE to write your own review
